Ms. Sutherland started her accounting career at Cynwyd Investments, a real estate investment company made up of 250 partnerships, while a co-op student at Drexel. The six-month assignment stretched into a full time arrangement as she completed a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. Her post college life took her to Miami where she worked in the small business department of Coopers & Lybrand and later a small quality CPA firm where she did audit and tax.
Ms. Sutherland planned a temporary trip to Philadelphia to study for the CPA exam with Harry Gross. Temporary turned into permanent when she stopped by Cynwyd Investments, and the man who had hired her seven years before immediately offered her a job in partnership services. She passed the CPA exam in 1979 in Philadelphia under the Florida application and continued working for Cynwyd until the birth of her second child six years later. While her children were infants, she obtained a real estate license and began a long history of self-employment which combined business management and accounting for high net worth individuals, small businesses, Schedule C tax returns, and residential sales. Ms. Sutherland’s CPA license is currently inactive. When her children went to college, she sold her business and returned to college for a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. The learning from this program came as much from working in North Philadelphia schools as it did from classes. Ms. Sutherland started with Main Line Accounting in 2013.
In her free time, Ms. Sutherland participates in a writing group, a book club, and regularly attends the theater in Philadelphia. During Advent, she runs an Alternative Gift Program at her church.
Ms. Sutherland lives in Berwyn not far from her grown children.
